FORT DELAWARE
This Civil War prisoner of war camp (with Union and Confederate reenactors) is located in the middle of the Delaware River on Pea Pack Island. Boats leave during the summer from Delaware City and from Fort Mott in New Jersey. The Fort was built in 1849 to protect Wilmington and Philadelphia from naval attack up the river from the Atlantic. The island provides one of the largest wading bird nesting areas in the United States visible along a hiking trail with observation tower.
