THE KATYN MEMORIAL
Perhaps the best view of Manhattan is found along the Jersey City waterfront at Exchange Place. As you approach the river, the stunning image of the Katyn Memorial draws you forward. The memorial honors the dead of the Katyn Forest Massacre. Thousands of Polish prisoners were killed in April and May 1940 during the Soviet invasion of eastern Poland. The bronze statue, 34 feet tall, is near a memorial to 9/11 with structural remnants from the Twin Towers.

FINN’S POINT NATIONAL CEMETERY
A most unusual opportunity to visit a Confederate Cemetery in New Jersey awaits the visitor to Finn’s Point. It is located just a few miles south of the Delaware Memorial Bridges at the southern terminus of the Jersey Turnpike. Confederate prisoners interred at the cemetery total 2,436 all in unmarked graves. Also buried here are 13 German prisoners of war who died at Fort Dix during World War II and 135 Union soldiers who died while guarding rebel prisoners at Fort Delaware. Be sure to visit nearby Forts Mott and Delaware.

OSWEGO LAKE
This lake, in one of the most beautiful spots in New Jersey, is surrounded by miles of cranberry bogs, scrub pines and silence. Come here to experience true wilderness only an hour away from the metropolitan centers of Philly and NYC. The lake, part of Penn State Forest, is also a great place for canoe and kayak adventures. Bring a picnic lunch and your bathing suit! Read The Pine Barrens by John McPhee before you go.
